League of Legends (LoL) Question: How is Aurelion Sol a Fighter?

How is Aurelion Sol a Fighter?

League of Legends considers Aurelion Sol's secondary role to be "Fighter". I don't quite understand how a squishy, ranged mage who dies to anyone that can get in melee distance could possibly be considered a "Fighter" champion.

Can someone please explain this to me?

According to League of Legends Wiki:

"Fighters are close range combatants that possess a mix of offensive and defensive capabilities. While they don't have as much utility as a tank or as much damage as an assassin, a fighter's damage will add up over time to make it a major threat. Each fighter has a unique blend of mobility, damage, disruption and durability."

It's fair to say Aurelion Sol ticks all the boxes:
βœ… Close-range combatant (damaging enemies with stars)
βœ… Possesses a mix of offensive (passive) and defensive (CC) capabilities
βœ… Damage will add up over time (more stars = more damage)
βœ… Blend of mobility (E), damage (passive), disruption (Q), durability (build path)

Well to be fair many mages do that and aren't considered Fighters. And I think Ryze actually has similar range to Aurelion Sol, I always see him as a short range mage which is why a lot of Ryze players grab Ghost and Flash together.

He's probably classified as a battlemage since his abilities have very limited range and he deals sustained damage. Also AuSols tend to build 2-3 health items and a zhonya's so they're not super squishy.

His stars are ranged combat though. The way to counter him is to either get in close range or kite him which is why assassins and very long range adcs are the strongest counter to him. I mean based on League's very vague way to explain it many champions that aren't considered fighters could be. For example Amumu could be considered one. He has close range combat(his autos). He has a mix of offensive and defensive capabilities. Damage adds up over time(his passive reduces enemy magic resist and he has a toggle AoE damage ability. Basically any champion can be "damage adds up over time"...). He has as much blend of mobility as Xin Zhao, his Q.

Yet Amumu is considered a Tank Mage even though he works far better as a fighter than Aurelion Sol.

I'd consider Aurelion Sol to be just a Mage or a Mage and Support rather than a Fighter and a Mage. Imo he's more of an assassin than a fighter. If you know how to use him right you can fly into an unsuspecting lane with a giant stun and kill the enemies.
