[Patch 13.21] My Galio's Build (Mid/Support Matchups)

By V1kt0r555
Introduction
Hello everyone and welcome to "My Galio's Build" guide. I am EUNE League of Legends player and my name in game is Hektor Ulmer (not my real life name, it's just what I added). My rank in other account was Diamond III, but I can't really remember my old account name because I took a break from the game for a several years but I really don't mind that and now I created new account to play for fun and not to be the best player in the game.

My favourite champion in game is Viktor, but I also love to play many champions especially in Mid lane. I play many roles but my best role is Mid and Top lane. From that being said, I am going to show you why Galio is anti-mage tanky champion is fun to play. If you don't wanna read my guide and if you are only interested on items, that is fine for me because I created this guide for any players who mains Galio to get better in ranked or to play him just for fun. :)
Why play Galio?
Abilities

Galio - The Colossus
Melee Anti-Mage Champion
Damage Type: Magic
Mid Lane: Great
Difficulty to play: Normal

Galio is a tanky anti-mage champion that does well against most of the champions that deals magic damage and can tank enough their magic damage thanks to your Shield of Durand. He has a good waveclear with his Winds of War and Colossal Smash which makes him hard pusher and he will eventually make the enemy opponent farm under their tower. He also has an excellent gank setup with Justice Punch and Shield of Durand which makes the enemy champion Flash away or die. Finally, his ultimate Hero's Entrance makes him a perfect roaming champion and can quickly follow their enemy roams fast. If you are well farmed and have some defensive items, there is not much the enemy opponent can do to you unless if they are very fed. From my experience, let me show you why Galio is a fun champion and how to play him properly.
When to pick Galio?

You can pick Galio whenever you are comfort to play with. He does well in every elo. It is not advice to pick him as a first pick before the enemy player can pick something that can counter you.

If you see that the enemy player has picked like Akali, Fizz, Lissandra etc. then you can safely pick Galio as he does really well against them due to your tankiness and roaming potential. Just be careful, one mistake can make your lane lost.

Any other ranged mage champions like Ahri, Annie, Malzahar etc is also good pick as you can tank their magic damage and push your lane forcing them to farm under their tower. Immobile mages cannot follow your roams due to your Hero's Entrance. Just don't let them poke you for free and you should be fine.

However, if you see that the enemy player has picked Irelia, Yone, Zed or any other champions that deals a lot of psyhical damage then do not pick Galio unless if you are very professional player with him. These AD champions are pretty much nightmare for Galio since he is an anti-mage champion that works well against a champions who deals magic damage only but he is terrible against AD champions. So try your best to avoid pick Galio if you see them. If you first picked Galio and they picked a champion that counters, then do your best to farm safely, roam other lanes and try to win the game as soon as possible.
Pros/Cons
Pros

+He is an anti-mage champion that does really well against a lot of mages
+Can negate a lot of magic damage with his Shield of Durand
+Has an AoE damage and AoE CC
+Good waveclear with his Winds of War and Colossal Smash
+Great at gank setup with his Justice Punch and Shield of Durand
+Great at roaming thanks to his Hero's Entrance
+Quite tanky champion and hard to kill once you have few items
+Does really well in teamfights
+Very underrated and low ban rated champion

Galio is a tanky anti-mage champion that can do well against a lot of mages thanks to his Shield of Durand. He can push really hard with his abilities, forcing their enemy champion to farm under their tower. He also has a great gank setup with his Justice Punch and Shield of Durand and can roam very effectively with his Hero's Entrance. On the top of the that, he does really great in teamfights thanks to his CC and he is almost never banned in draft modes.
Cons

-Can be somehow poked down easily
-Mana hungry early if he spams a lot
-Bad against AD champions
-Missing your Justice Punch can lose your trade
-Vulnerable when his abilities are on cooldown
-His Hero's Entrance can only target on ally champion
-Can be bad if he is behind
-Not the best scaling champion in the late game
-Very unpopular champion (he is low picked)

Unfortunately, he has a lot of weakness like any other champions. He doesn't do well against AD champions as his Shield of Durand is only effective against magic damage. If he misses his abilities on the enemy, he will lose trades and the enemy can take him down. His ultimate Hero's Entrance can only target on the ally champion meaning you can't cast anywhere like any other champions who has global ultimate. If the enemy player has managed to kill Galio few times, he can be pretty useless in the late game and he won't be able to do much damage.
Summoner Spells
FLASH
Flash is the most important spell in the game. It helps you from escaping nasty situations and also for chasing and killing enemies whenever you can't reach them. Always take this every game!
TELEPORT
Teleport is very good summoner spell on Galio. It can be used to teleport on allied towers and it has a 360 seconds of cooldown. After 14 minutes, you can cast on allied minions, wards, towers and other allied constructs and has a 240 seconds of cooldown. This is where you should take on most of the games.

IGNITE
This is a summoner spell where you wanna play aggressive for having kill pressure against champions who has a weak early game or against a champions that heals a lot such as Sylas, Vladimir etc. It helps you to get an early kill especially if you have started with Dark Seal. Take this if you are planning to go aggresive.

EXHAUST
This spell helps a lot against champions who is assassin or who does a lot of damage with auto attacks such as Yasuo, Yone etc. Having Exhaust makes great 1 vs 1 dueling but take this spell only if your ADC or Support doesn't have.

GHOST
Ghost is another viable option for Galio. This can be good if you wanna to catch your enemies with Shield of Durand. I would take this if the enemy team has a lot of escaping tools where you can't catch them that easily.
Runes

Keystone

  • Aftershock is really great Rune for Galio. After you immobilize an enemy champion, you will gain bonus Armor and Magic Resist for 2.5 and after that, you will deal bonus magic damage to nearby enemies. This Rune really works well with Justice Punch and Shield of Durand where you will be able to trade the enemy champion effectively. This is where you are going to use this Rune in most of the game.

Tier 1

  • Shield Bash is extremely good on Galio due to your magic shield from Shield of Durand. With this Rune, you will gain small amount of Armor and Magic Resist while shielded and when you gain a new shield, your next basic attack on the enemy champion will deal bonus damage. This works really well together with Colossal Smash.

Tier 2

  • Bone Plating is good especially against melee champions where you can reduce their damage from spells or attacks. This is where you take in most of the games if the champion isn't heavy poking.

Tier 3

  • Overgrowth is really good on Galio. With this rune, your health will grow when the game goes on and you will be eventually tanky in the mid/late game.

Tier 1

  • Nimbus Cloak is good on Galio. With this after casting a Summoner Spell, you will gain a short Movement Speed and can pass through minions.

Tier 2

  • Transcendence gives you cooldown reduction upon reaching levels. Having lower cooldowns means you can spam more abilities very often.

Take double [ Adaptive for early damage and better farming minions with your abilities. For defense, take magic resist AP matchups.

Same goes from above but with armor against AD matchups.

This is where you wanna take double magic resist against hard AP matchups where you are going to get bullied a lot.

This is where you wanna take double armor against hard AD matchups especially against assassins where they can burst you down quickly such as Zed.

If you are not sure who is going to be your opponent in mid lane for example if their enemy team has Ekko and Irelia and one of them can be mid, then take for defense health.

If you are against a champion that will poke you a lot, then this Rune page will help you:

Tier 2

  • Second Wind is a must have against heavy poking champions that will constantly harass you a lot. With this Rune and/or Doran's Shield you will stay healthy in your lane for much longer.

Tier 3

  • Unflinching is good on Galio especially if the enemy team has a lot of CC. With this Rune, you will be able to reduce their CC duration and even more the lower your health is.

Tier 1

  • Manaflow Band is great for any mages especially on Galio. When fully stacked, you gain permamently 250 bonus mana and passive that restores 1% of missing mana every 5 seconds.

If you are against an easy matchup especially if the enemy champion has no kill pressure on you, then you can take this Rune page:

Tier 2

  • Conditioning is very good on tank especially on Galio. With this Rune, you will gain Armor and Magic Resist after 9 minutes and you will be much more tankier than usual.

Tier 2

  • Gathering Storm is good when you want more damage in the late game. It's pretty weak early but later it will become much stronger and you will be able to deal much more damage.

There are also another viable Keystone Runes that works well for Galio but a lot of players don't usually take it since they mostly take either Aftershock or Predator. First, I will show you for Inspiration, then after that, Sorcery:

Keystone

  • Unsealed Spellbook is an another option Keystone Rune for Galio. With this, you will be able to swap your Summoner Spell after 6 minutes in game. Each Summoner Spell swap will reduce the cooldown of swap. Very good and underrated Keystone Rune for many champions especially if you take Teleport. It's also good to have against some long ranged champions or even harder lanes.

For Tier 1, take one of these depending on matchup:

Tier 1

  • Magical Footweargives you free boots at 12:00 and for every takedown, it reduces cooldown by 45 seconds. This is great where you don't have to spend 300 gold in shop but keep in mind that you cannot buy boots before then.

Tier 1

  • Perfect Timing is good when you don't wanna waste 650 gold in shop and each takedown reduces your timer. This is viable against matchups such as Fizz, Zed etc. to avoid their ultimates.

For Tier 2, take Future's Market to buy your Items faster or Minion Dematerializer to instakill minion or Biscuit Delivery for a better sustain:

Tier 2

  • Future's Market is very good and pretty strong Rune since you can buy Items early even if you don't have much that gold. The amount of gold increases over time.

Tier 2

  • Minion Dematerializer gives you 3 Items that permamently kills any minion. This Rune is quite good for those who wants to delete it and push their lanes hard. Use it on Cannon minion since it has large HP and gives you much gold.

Tier 2

  • Biscuit Delivery gives you every 2 minutes until 6 minutes (max 3). It restores health and mana and the lower you are, it restore much faster. Consuming or selling gives permamently increase your mana cap by 50 which is really nice for any champions who struggles with mana.

Tier 3

  • Cosmic Insight gives you cooldown reduction from your summoner spells and items which is really good as you can activate earlier than usual.

This is a Keystone Rune for Sorcery (other Sorcery Rune is explained from above):

Keystone

  • Phase Rush is very good especially if you want to short trade with your opponent. It gives you bonus Movement Speed when dealing damage to champions with attacks or abilities. Also, gives you Slow Resistances which is very effective against perma slow team.

If you are planning to roam a lot and/or if you don't wanna to use Aftershock or other viable Keystone Runes for Galio, then you can take this Rune page (it's no longer viable due to changes):

Keystone

  • Predator is extremely good on roaming champions such as Galio. With this Rune, you will be able to chase the enemy champion much faster. Keep in mind that you need boots to activate the Predator and it cancels it once you have dealt damage with an ability.

Tier 1

Tier 2

Tier 3

  • Ingenious Hunter is very good to reduce your CD on your activateble items especially on trinkets. Combining together with Predator, you will activate it even more than before.

Tier 1

  • Waterwalking gives you bonus movement speed and damage when you are on river. This is very good when you are going to roam on other lanes when you have Predator.

Tier 2

  • Celerity gives you movement speed effect on any source. It really works well with your Predator and other movement speed items as well.
Aftershock or Predator on Galio?

AFTERSHOCK
VS

PREDATOR

So people are asking which rune is best in Season 12 on Galio. Aftershock or Predator? A lot of people are taking Predator because you can chase the enemy champion and catch them easily especially if you are going to roam a lot at other lanes. Without Predator, you won't catch enemies easily. Aftershock gives you armor and magic resist when you immobilize an enemy champion and after a few seconds, you will deal magic damage to surrounding enemies. This gives you a lot of more tankiness than Predator and it's very good to trade your opponent well (if you don't miss your abilities of course). So which should you pick? Let's see first what these 2 Rune Keystones actually do:

AFTERSHOCK
PASSIVE: Immobilizing an enemy champion grants a static 35 (+ 80% bonus armor) bonus armor and 35 (+ 80% bonus magic resistance) bonus magic resistance for 2.5 seconds. The bonus resistances are capped at 80 − 150 (based on level).

After the duration, you release a shockwave that deals 25 − 120 (based on level) (+ 8% of your bonus health) magic damage to nearby enemy champions and monsters.

Cooldown: 20 seconds

PREDATOR
PASSIVE: Boots gain the active effect PREDATOR.

ACTIVE - PREDATOR: After a 0.25-second cast time, gain bonus movement speed for 10 seconds, ramping up to 25%-50% over 1 second, while moving toward enemy champions within 3000 units.

After ramping up, your next damaging basic attack or ability against an enemy champion deals 20 − 180 (based on level) (+ 25% bonus AD) (+ 15% AP) bonus Adaptive damage after a 0.25-second delay and ends the effect.

Cooldown: 120 − 60 (based on level) seconds

Range: 3000

As you can see, these 2 Rune Keystones are different. Aftershock is very good for those who wants to reduce their enemy damage and to deal damage to all nearby. It's very good especially if you are trading against melee champions or a mage who is immobile. It has pretty low cooldown at only 20 seconds.

However, Predator is very good for those who wants to roam a lot. Galio benefits on roaming so taking Predator can help you a lot to chase enemy champions and if he manages to catch them, he will get easy takedown. The downsides is that it has a long cooldown and it only deals bonus damage only with a one attack or spell where it ends Predator.

Both of these Rune Keystones are very good on Galio. Aftershock is good for trading while Predator is good for roaming. Which one is better? It is up to you. I personally take Aftershock to increase my defense. I don't usually take Predator a lot. You can try these Rune Keystone what suits you and use it which one do you like.
Abilities

Colossal Smash (Passive)
RANGE: 150
COST: N/A

INNATE: Galio's next basic attack is periodically modified to deal 15-200 (based on level) (+1.0 per attack damage) (+50% of ability power) (+60% of bonus magic resistance) magic damage to its target and all enemies around it.

Colossal Smash (Passive)

Winds of War (Q)

Galio cannot use Flash while channeling Shield of Durand.

Second Cast: Galio taunts all nearby enemies for 0.5-1.5 seconds and deals between 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+30% of ability power) and 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 (+90% of ability power) magic damage to them (based on charge time), while also refreshing the damage reduction for 2 seconds.

Shield of Durand (W)

Justice Punch (E)

COST: 100
COOLDOWN: 200/180/160
Galio designates the target allied champion's location at the time of cast as his landing spot, granting Shield of Durand's passive magic damage shield to all allied champions in the area he casted it at for 5 seconds, and channels for 1.25 seconds.

You should start at lvl 1 Winds of War in almost every single game. At lvl 2, put point in Shield of Durand to gain magic shield then at lvl 3 Justice Punch. Max first Winds of War as it it his main damage and waveclear ability. Then after that, max Shield of Durand to increase your magic shield and damage and then max last Justice Punch as it only knocks up and it doesn't increases the duration. At lvl 6, 11 and 16, always put point on Hero's Entrance.

In some case, you want to max Shield of Durand first instead of Winds of War against harder AP matchup or if you want to tank their magic damage in general. In this way, you will be able to survive their magic burst and they will not be able to kill you that easily.
Items

Starting Items:

DORAN'S RING
A standard item for most of the mages. It gives you Aility Power, Health and a passive that restores mana when you damage and enemy champion. This is where you should start in most of the games.

CORRUPTING POTION
Another viable start especially if you are against melee champion. With this start, you will stay in your lane for much longer especially if you take Rune Time Warp Tonic. You should start wit this if you are against harder matchups or if you need sustain in general.

DARK SEAL
This starting item is good for those who wants to stack AP or if you are thinking you will have an easier matchup. Later, you can upgrade it into Mejai's Soulstealer if you have a lot of stack but don't upgrade it if you didn't manage to have takedowns or if you have died a lot.

DORAN'S SHIELD
Some players asks why start Doran's Shield. Sure, maybe it looks like a wierd start on Galio but this item is good on any tanks especially on him since he is also a tank. This item is very good against heavy poke champions who will constantly harass you with auto attacks or with single spell. It gives you health and health regeneration after taking damage from a champion. You don't have to start with this item but it's great against a champions who will poke you a lot.

BOOTS
Only start with Boots if you are going to take Rune Predator. With this item, it will help you to roam other lanes faster and even perhaps you can get early kills and snowball.

RELIC SHIELD
If you are playing as Support, you need to start with this Item. Every tanky Support has to start with this to passively gain gold and to execute minions to gain permament gold to you and your ally. Always keep it in your inventory as you will always ward somewhere once this Item is upgraded at least once.

STEALTH WARD
You must ALWAYS start with Stealth Ward. It reveals surrounding area so you can see on the map if the enemy junglers comes to gank you or if enemy mid laners goes roaming. Later after the enemy or your tower in mid lane is destroyed you can keep it or you can buy Farsight Alteration or Oracle Lens depending what the enemy team comp looks like.

First Recall:

LOST CHAPTER
This item is very important for any champions who deal a lot of magic damage. It gives you Ability Haste, AP, Mana and restores your mana when you lvl up. Buy it i you didn't struggle in your lane.

SEEKER'S ARMGUARD
If you are facing against AD champions especially against harder matchups, then get it to survive their burst. With this item, you will be able to reduce their psyhical damage and they will have a hard time to kill you unless if they are ahead. Later upgrade it into Zhonya's Hourglass.

VERDANT BARRIER
If you struggle against AP champion or if you wanna reduce their magic damage, then buy it first. This item will help you especially if the enemy team deals a lot of magic damage. Later upgrade it into Banshee's Veil.

CATALYST OF AEONS
This item is back like Rod of Ages. It gives you nice amount of health and mana. Consider to buy this only if you are going to build Rod of Ages as Mythic item.

LIFEWELL PENDANT
If you have enough 1050 gold, buy this Item so you can get your Mythic Item much faster. If you don't have that much gold, then buy at least Ruby Crystal and/or Cloth Armor.

CONTROL WARD
Buy this often when you are going to recall. It will help you to reveal location and invisible wards so you can clean them. This also reveals invisible champions such as Twitch. Put it in the bush near enemy red buff, players often don't see there.

Mythic Items:

EVERFROST
This Mythic Item is very good on Galio. It gives you AP, Ability Haste, Health and Mana. With this item, you will be able to catch the enemy champions easily. This is because of your Justice Punch since you can dash them and then you can activate your Everfrost to root them and then activate Shield of Durand to taunt them which makes them impossible to escape. This is where you should build in most of the games especially if the enemy team has a lot of dashes such as Irelia, Yasuo etc.

HEXTECH ROCKETBELT
Another viable Mythic Item especially if the enemy team is stacking a lot of Magic Resist. Unlike Everfrost, it doesn't give you Mana instead it gives you a small Magic Penetration. You can activate it for a dash to deal magic damage and afterwards, you gain Movement Speed while moving towards enemy champions. You should buy this Item if the enemy team is tanky or if you wanna more AP for damage.

NIGHT HARVESTER
Only buy this if you are fed or if the enemy team is squishy and doesn't have any bruisers or tanks. With this Item, it does really high amount of damage and gives you Movement Speed.

ROD OF AGES
Rod of Ages is back for beloved players! This item is currently strong right now. It gives you Ability Power, Health and Mana and each minute it increases your Ability Power, Health and Mana up to 10 times. After reaching max stacks, you will gain a level and it will improve your other passive that restores your Mana and Health upon taking damage from champions. This item is very good for many mages and AP bruisers but the downsides it slowly scales in late game. It's great Mythic item for [[Galio] since he is really tanky and he loves tanky defensive stats.

Boots:

SORCERER'S SHOES
These boots are very solid choice for any mages. Buy those if you need Magic Penetration and you didn't struggle agains your opponent.

MERCURY'S TREADS
These boots are also viable for Galio. It helps you to reduce their magic damage and reduce the CC duration. Buy this if you struggle against hard AP champion.

PLATED STEELCAPS
If you are facing against AD champion, then this boots is good to go. It helps you to reduce their physical damage. Buy it when the enemy team doesnt have a lot of CC and deals mostly AD damage.

IONIAN BOOTS OF LUCIDITY
Quite good for CDR. With these boots, you will be able to spam your abilities a lot. Buy this if you are confident.

MOBILITY BOOTS
If you are playing as Support and you want to roam a lot in other lanes to help your allies, then these boots will help you to gain speed.

Core Items:

ZHONYA'S HOURGLASS
This item is important for Galio especially if you are facing an AD champion. It gives you Ability Haste, AP, and Armor. It has an active that you can become untargetable which you can avoid a lot of nasty situations. This is where you buy this Item in almost every single game.

COSMIC DRIVE
This item now gives you much better Ability Power, Ability Haste and gives you better passive. It gives you bonus Movement Speed when you deal damage to the enemy champion, maximum at 4 stacks and at final stack, you will gain an additional bonus Movement Speed. This will refresh when you deal damage.

DEMONIC EMBRACE
You should buy this only if the enemy team has a lot of Tanks especially if they stack a lot of Health. This item gives you AP, Health and you gain even more AP when you have more Health. It also burns the enemies when you deal damage to them with abilities.

RABADON'S DEATHCAP
You should buy this as a last item to increase your Ability Power so you can deal more damage with your abilities. If you are very fed, then you can buy this Item earlier to snowball hard.

VOID STAFF
You should buy this Item as a last 6th Item. It gives you bonus Magic Penetration which ignores enemy Magic Resist which helps you to deal more damage.

BANSHEE'S VEIL
This item is very good on Galio especially if you are facing against AP champion. It will help you to reduce their magic damage and has a spellshield that blocks one ability every 40 seconds. You should buy this if the enemy team has tons of CC and has most AP champions.

Situational Items:

Damage Items:

LIANDRY'S ANGUISH
This Mythic Item can be situational if you are up against many tanks. It burns them to deal damage based on max Health. I don't buy this as a Galio player but it can be good especially if you combine together with Demonic Embrace.

MORELLONOMICON
This item is good if their enemy has a lot of healings or if you are facing against healing champions such as Sylas, Vladimir etc. Buy this if your team doesn't have any antiheals.

RYLAI'S CRYSTAL SCEPTER
I think this item is underrated for Galio as you will be able to slow your enemies with your abilities and they will have a hard time to escape from you. Not a bad situational item.

SHADOWFLAME
This item is good especially if the enemy team has a bruiser or tank and they have a lot of shields from abilities or items. Buy it if you want to deal more damge and you need more Health and AP.

MEJAI'S SOULSTEALER
An upgraded item from Dark Seal if you snowball really hard. Not reccommended to use in ranked games unless if you are very professional player with Galio.

Defensive Items:

THORNMAIL
If you want to tank their AD damage or if the enemy team is full of AD, then this item is good to go. Since Galio is a mage but also a tank, this item benefits on him. Buy it if your team doesn't have any bruiser or tank.

FROZEN HEART
If the enemy team does a lot of physical damage and they only deal damage that reliaze on auto attacking a lot, then this Item will help you a lot. It's really strong Item so you should defenitely buy it when you are playing as Support.

RANDUIN'S OMEN
Similar to Thornmail if the enemy team is full of AD, this item can help you a lot. It's also really good against who only uses too much auto attacks suc as Master Yi, Tryndamere etc.

DEAD MAN'S PLATE
Really good Item since it's good against AD champions and it helps you to chase enemy champions faster. You should buy this as Support if the enemy team has a lot of kiting potentional where you can't engage that well.

FORCE OF NATURE
This item benefits on Galio. You should buy this item if the enemy team is full of AP and doesn't do a lot of AD damage or if you wanna to tank their magic damage. This item also has a passive that gives you bonus movement speed and reduces incoming magic damage.

ABYSSAL MASK
This item has been reworked recently and now it's very good Magic Resist item especially against AP team. You should buy if the enemy team deals mostly a lot of magic damage and also if they stack Magic Resist since this item has a passive that curses enemy champions, reduces their Magic Resist when you are nearby enemy champions. Also, you gain bonus Magic Resist for each enemy cursed.

SPIRIT VISAGE
Great Magic Resist Item especially if you are against fully AP enemy team. It helps you to increase your Health more from any sources and you gain more shield from your Shield of Durand.

TURBO CHEMTANK
A good Magic Resist Item that you can activate it to gain bonus Movement Speed and ghosting through your minions while moving towards towers and enemy champions. If you get really close to enemies, you will slow them.

Support Items:

EVENSHROUD
This Mythic Item is really great to have it when you play Galio as a Support. It gives you nice defensive stats and when you immobilize an enemy champion or you are being affected by enemy champion, they will take more damage by you and your allies.

LOCKET OF THE IRON SOLARI
Another good Support Mythic Item for Galio. You can activate it to grant you and your allie a shield that can negate some damage. It's great to survive some deadly burst against some nasty champions.

VIGILANT WARDSTONE
As a Support, if you are planning to carry more wards and you want to non stop putting wards anywhere, then this Item will surely help you.

KNIGHT'S VOW
Great Support Item if you are planning to redirect their enemy damage and you and your ally will heal depending on your missing Health.

ZEKE'S CONVERGENCE
This Support Item is good if you are planning to deal bonus damage while immobilizing an enemy champion and marking them. You can activate in on any ally to become an Accomplice. While your ally is marked by your Item, you and your ally will deal more damage to the marked enemy champion.

Elixir:

ELIXIR OF SORCERY
If your build is full, then buy Elixir of Sorcery if you wanna to deal more damage. It is the best elixir for any mages including Galio. It gives your AP, Mana Regeneration and it has a passive that deals True Damage to the enemy champions and turrets.

ELIXIR OF IRON
If you need more HP to tank their damage, then buy Elixir of Iron. It is best for any tanks or bruisers but also for Galio. It gives you Health, Tenacity and increased size and it has a passive that grants allied champions bonus movement speed when leaving path behind.
Early Game
In the early game, your job is to focus on last hitting minions. If you are against a ranged champion, push your wave with Winds of War so you can force your enemy to farm under his tower. Try to not get poked too much early, you are not tanky before you get some few items and if you are having trouble early, call for your jungler to help. Galio has an excellent gank setup thanks to his Justice Punch and Shield of Durand and if you manage to get takedown, you will have a much easier lane. If you are however against a melee champion, you can trade them with Winds of War and Colossal Smash. Be careful around the minions, they will go aggro on you if you attack your opponent and don't let your opponent trade you for free. If you didn't managed to trade well, you will have a much hard time in your lane.

On a first recall, if you have at least 1300 gold, then buy Lost Chapter if you are planning to buy Everfrost or Hextech Alternator if you are planning to buy other Mythic Items or if you wanna to reduce their damage, then go for Seeker's Armguard or Verdant Barrier depending on matchup. After that, your waveclear will be much faster and you will deal more damage to your opponent. If you have pushed your wave, you can go roam other lanes (especially if you have Predator) if their enemy is pushing hard. Galio is really good at roaming so you should be able to roam as much as you can. If your team is pushing and you can't roam, then just stay in your lane and farm and poke your enemy. After you have finished Mythic Item and you have some defensive items, you will start to shine and be tanky enough to reduce their damage.
Mid Game
In the mid game, you should still do the waveclear and roam other lanes often. Start taking objectives like taking the enemy towers, do dragons or try to steal their jungle camps (blue or red buff]. If you are somehow behind, don't worry. You will be still useful thanks to your tons of CC. Make sure that use your Hero's Entrance on someone who is going to engage first on the enemies like Leona, Thresh etc so that you have a high chance to knock your enemies up. Sometimes, you will manage to catch them but sometimes you don't but it's worth to try anyway.

In the meantime, you should have completed at least 1 core item Zhonya's Hourglass and after that, you can go for Cosmic Drive or Demonic Embrace depending how the enemy team looks like. In teamfights, you should focus on squishy target like ADC or if the Mid or Top lane is fed but it's not tanky. If you have managed to kill who deals mostly a lot of damage, then you will have an easier time but make sure that your team doesn't screw up or you will probably lose the teamfight or even the game. Make sure to always take down objectives such as dragons and place wards in bushes or near at dragon and baron. Galio is great in teamfights with his CC abilities and tankiness so you should go first or second depending how good is your team at engaging.
Late Game
In the late game, you want to always grouping with your team in the stage of the game.
You won't be able to deal much damage in the late game like any other champions. Galio isn't bad but it's not good either. You will be rarely focused in teamfights due to your tankiness. It is wise to go first if your team doesn't have any defensive items and always focus on target who deals a lot of damage. Make sure that you do NOT miss your Justice Punch and Shield of Durand otherwise you will lose the game. If you are planning to push your wave, you can do it but make sure that your Hero's Entrance is in your team's range so that you can come there fast quickly. You have a lot of CC abilities so use them in teamfights very well.

Your build should be almost completed if you are well farmed. Your damage should be enough to kill one squishy target if you have managed to catch. Do not try to focus on tank or bruiser, thse targets should be last focused as they don't deal a lot of damage unless if they are really fed. Use your Hero's Entrance wisely on someone. It wil be better to use if 2 or 3 enemies are close to one of your champion so you can knock them and deal damage (if they didn't escape of course). When doing any objectives, try to prevent your enemies by poking them with Winds of War. If you have managed to get a soul of dragon and/or a baron, you will have much easier time in teamfights but it will not work in every game just keep in mind.
Combos/Tricks

You can do many combo tricks with Galio that many players do not know about that. Here are some examples:

This is for trading:

1st: Justice Punch + Winds of War + Shield of Durand + basic attack

2nd: Justice Punch + Winds of War + basic attack + Shield of Durand + basic attack

3rd: Justice Punch + Shield of Durand + Winds of War + basic attacks

4th: + Justice Punch + Shield of Durand + Winds of War + basic attack

5th: + Shield of Durand + Justice Punch + Winds of War + basic attack

And this is when you are going to gank or helping allies:

Hero's Entrance + Shield of Durand + Winds of War + Justice Punch + basic attack

There are also other combos but these are currently that I just show.
How to farm

Farming is the most important thing in the game. You have to make sure to always last hit minions when they are close to death. Simply use your basic attack to last hit minions. When you are going to push as Galio, use your Winds of War on 3 ranged minions and hit them with Colossal Smash. With this, you will be able to clear minions much faster. Don't spam your Shield of Durand and Justice Punch on minions, just use them only on the enemy champion when you are going to trade or when your jungler appears. Galio is a strong pusher champion but be careful when you are pushing too hard as the enemy jungler can appear and your opponent can harass you near his tower so just don't take too much damage.
Warding

Warding in League of Legends is incredibly important for every role and every game you play. It is a necessity for everyone to know when to ward, where to ward and how to become better at warding.

Without any vision control, you will find it difficult to survive the early game, win the mid game and close out the late game. When you understand the fundamentals of warding and how you can use it to your advantage, it can really help you win more.

Every player has to start (unless if they play as a jungler) with Stealth Ward. This ward is very important to reveal small area around. You can either place it if you think the enemy team is going to invade or you can place it later once around 3 minutes. Once you have first recall, you should buy at least 1 or 2 Control Wards. This ward will always stay until it's destroyed and it will reveal any invicible units and Stealth Wards as well. I have added wards in this new Mobafire map and you can see notes by using your mouse on Ward Icons:

This is probably the best places you can put your wards. The more you will put the wards, the more vision score you will gain. After you have finished your lane, you can keep your Stealth Ward if you need more wards or you can replace it with Farsight Alteration to revelar a small area from huge distance or with Oracle Lens if you wanna clear enemy wards or the enemy team has like Teemo to reveal his mushrooms. It's up to you.

However, if you are playing Galio as a Support, then this map will show you where is good places to put wards. Make sure to always buy Control Wards everytime when you are going to recall:

Roaming

Roaming is very impactful for a mid laner because it is the center lane on the map. You are always a threat to help out top or bot lane. Mid laners are also usually the closest to their jungler, and as such can make plays on the map together.

It is important to first tend to your minion wave before you roam. Ideally, you will get the minion wave pushed into the enemy turret and then look to roam. You can still roam if you clear the minion wave after the enemy mid clears theirs, but you will have lost tempo on your map movement.

You also need to be aware of the situation on the map you are moving toward. Your allies should have enough health and mana to support you in your gank. It is also helpful if your allies can communicate to you what summoner spells the enemies still have available.

You must be sure that you have a safe path to the lane you want to roam on. The enemy jungler can block your path if you do not have sufficient wards or information on the junglers whereabouts.

Every champion in Mid lane can roam even those who is immobile. As a Galio player, he is extremely good at roaming especially if you are using Rune Predator. When you have pushed your wave and your opponent is farming under his tower, you can begin to roam if the enemy players are pushing hard. When you are for example going to roam in bot lane, use your Predator when you are in enemy range, then quickly use your Justice Punch to knock him, Winds of War for damage and Shield of Durand to taunt him as soon as possible before he manages to escapes with Flash or other abilities that has an escape. In this way, you will be able to get kill or assist and the players will have an advantage but that doesn't mean you will win this game. The enemy still can come back and your team can possibly die even if your players are ahead. When you are lvl 6, you can roam even faster thanks to your Hero's Entrance which you can target on any ally but keep in mind that you can only cast on your allies. In this way, you will be able to get kills or assist easily or sometimes you won't be able get it because the enemy players has managed to escape. As a Galio player, you should roam very often when you have pushed your wave and you can also buy Oracle Lens to remove enemy wards so that your opponent doesn't know where are you going and he must ping about missing. (I drawed this myself. The white is simple way to roam, the blue when you are on the blue side and the red when you are on the red side):

White Lines: This is the simple way to roam. Going on the river and roaming either on Bot or Top way is the fastest way to roam.

Blue Lines: If you are on the blue side, there are some ways to roam. If you are planning to roam on Bot lane, you can do it by going on river, then heading near Blue buff on the red side and then going into bushes. Once you reach there and if the enemy Bot lane is near their tower, you can come to help your Bot lane to get the kills. If you are going on Top lane, first go to riven then go between the baron and Red buff on the red side and then go in the bushes. Be prepared if the enemy doesn't know you are there so you can help your Top laner to get the kill.

Red Lines: If you are on the red side, if you are going to roam on Bot lane, you can go between Red buff on the blue side and dragon and once you reach in the bushes, be quick to get there or else the enemy will retreat near the tower. Or if they are near their tower and they are low, you can try to get the kills. If going on Top lane, first go to the river and then go left where is there near blue buff on the blue side and then head to the bushes. Once you have reached there, if the enemy is completely low, help your Top laner to kill the enemy.
Playing from behind

So everybody is asking what to do when your enemy is ahead and you are behind. Well, if you are behind, don't worry about it, the game isn't just over yet and it isn't so early to surrender. Keep your mental up. Playing from behind is something you got to learn. This extends to both in lane and out of lane gameplay. If your team is ahead and you're behind, then there is a high chance to win the game. For example, if Bot lane is very ahead and they have destroyed their enemy tower, they will likely to be fed and the enemy team will try hard to destroy them so just pray if they are good players. If you and all your team is behind, then there is a very little chance to comeback as it will be very hard to stop them unless if the enemy is completely throwing the game.

Your general focus should be on farming and avoiding fights. Also avoid roaming and utilize lane wards so you can warn your team when your opponent goes somewhere. Do not follow their roams. Even if you do get there in time, your impact will be severely limited due to being behind. Also, build defensive items to survive if you are behind. This will help you to prevent them to busrt you down quickly. It will not work every single game but at least it will give you a bit advantage.

As a Galio player, try not to die in your lane especially if you are against assassins. If you do die, they will start to snowball and it will be hard to stop them. It's not easy to comeback as Galio but you can still be useful due to your CC abilities. If your team flames you, simply just mute them and focus on your game. If you do mute toxic and flaming players each game, you will likely have better time in game.
Matchups in Mid Lane

Galio has a pretty decent matchups but some of them are really horrible. He struggles mostly against AD champions since your Shield of Durand is only effective against magic damage and also once a mage buys Liandry's Torment and Void Staff, he will have really hard time against them. That being said, I am going to show you matchups in midlane. Please keep in mind that some matchups are also quite rare and I will also add matchups that for example: sometimes, ADC from bot is in mid or sometimes, Support is in mid and goes AP. I will also add difficulties and things in matchups that you will see:

Difficulty: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard or Very Hard

Recommended Runes: This will describe which runes you should use against champions. Some of the champions will have 2 or even more options but it's up to you which you will use

Which Summoner Spell you should use: This will describe what summoner spell you should use before the game starts

Which Item you should start: This will describe what item you should buy first when the game starts

Which Rune Keystone they use: This will describe which rune keystone are they using

Which Summoner Spell they use: This will describe which summoner spell are they using (I will not put Flash as a main summoner spell on matchups since everyone is using it so I will just add only what secondary summoner spell are they using). However, some players will use both summoner spells like Ignite and Teleport instead of Flash for killing pressure

Which Item do they start: This will describe which item have they started with

Their usual full build: This will describe what players have their full build when they have bought items (This is just in my opinion. Many players have their different full build what do they like or what is strong in the current meta)

I added a quick matchup tier list so you can see every champion what I added in each difficulty that there are in my opinion but every player have their opinions as well (I will soon add more matchups that rarely happens in mid lane):

Now, I will show matchups in alphabetic order from A to Z and explain how to win and survive every lane:

Synergies

There are a lot of champions that works really well with Galio but I a going to show you some champions in my opinion that are best in each lane.

Amumu
Almost every champion works perfect with Amumu and Galio is no exception. When Amumu uses his ultimate to stun champions, Galio can use his ultimate to target on him and Galio will easily knock the enemies dealing massive damage. Very good combo.

Camille
Camille works really well together with Galio. When she uses her ultimate on the enemy, Galio can cast his ultimate on her to give her shield and to deal damage and knock if there are enemies around.

Fiddlesticks
Combining together with Fiddlesticks and Galio's ultimate makes them extremely deadly in teamfights.

Gangplank
Gangplank is a good synergy iwt Galio. When Galio uses his ultimate on someone, he can cast his ultimate to get takedowns. He can also get kills easily with barrels if Galio manages to taunt enemies. Not to mention tought, his ultimate is global.

Hecarim
Hecarim is great synergy with Galio. When Galio manages to taunt enemies, Hecarim can easily fear them with his ultimate and get easy kills.

Jarvan IV
You are both Demacians, you fight for Justice and your ultimates makes them incredible combo in teamfights. Really amazing duo.

Malphite
Malphite is an amazing teamfight champion thanks to his ultimate. When you have managed to taunt your enemies, he can easily knock them with his ultimate.

Nocturne
Nocturne is another great synergy with Galio. When Nocturne uses his ultimate on the enemy champion, Galio can cast his ultimate on Nocturne for a double gank. This is so satisfying.

Rakan
Extremely good engaging support works really together with Galio since you can catch your enemies easily. You both have knock ups and you are quite tanky and the enemies will have a hard time to kill you.

Seraphine
Another great support due to her having a lot of CC and healings. If she manages to use her ultimate on the enemies, Galio can easily taunt them before the enemies can do back.

Shaco
This is a funny duo. The reason why is this good synergy is because you can use your ultimate on his clone. Well, that's the reason. :)

Shen
When you use your ultimate on your ally, Shen can use his ultimate on you to come help your team and also you both have taunt abilities which makes them really good synergy.

Vi
When she uses her ultimate on the enemy champion, Galio can use his ultimate on her to protect her and knock the enemies around. Pretty good synergy.

Viego
A popular powerful jungler that works really well with Galio due to his invisibility and insane damage scaling and since you can use your ult on him even if he uses his passive on the enemy champion, this synergy is great.

Wukong
A nice synergy since you both have knock up abilities which makes them powerful in teamfights but also at ganking as well.

Yasuo
Galio knock up the enemies, Yasuo uses his ultimate instead of using his wind tornado. Very satisfying combo.

Zac
You both have knock up abilities and you are both tanky. You can easily destroy the entire enemy team if they are too close each other which makes them almost impossible to escape.

Ziggs
If you have managed to taunt enemies, Ziggs can easily destroy them with his abilities including his ultimate. Very powerful and deadly especially in the late game since Ziggs scales really well.
Synergies with ADC as Support

This chapter will show you which ADC is the best and which is the worst to play with as Galio Support.

Strong
Very good ADC to have him since he has a lot of different weapons from his passive that can bully enemies hard and also, scales well. With him, he will have easier time to kill your enemies if you manage to CC on enemies.

Very Strong
Ashe is a very strong champion right now and works really well together with Galio. She can kite well, poke and has infinite slow abilities. Having her will make you much easier to land your CC abilities and the enemies won't be able to escape from you.

Bad
Not really good to have him in Bot lane since he is very immobile and squishy and you both deal magic damage meaning the enemy team will build a lot of Magic Resist Items. However, if you manage to play smart and you do not troll, then you might be able to carry the game.

Strong
Very good ADC to have her due to her long range pokes and kiting potentional. She can place her traps on ground and if the enemy player get stucked, you can land your abilities quite easy and she can poke them to death.

Strong
An off meta ADC champion that can be OK with her together. She is quite weak early but scales like a monster. You and her CC can be deadly for enemies but the downsides is that enemies will likely buy Magic Resist Items.

Very Strong
Very powerful ADC champions and he is perhaps one of the best to have him as Galio. He is a very powerful lane bully that can snowball hard and can attack enemies hard if you land your CC on them. If you both win your lane early, then you will win in late game for sure.

Good
Has tons of pokes that can keep distance but lacks of any CC. He can easily take enemies with his skillshots if you land your CC on enemies. Overall, not a bad champion to have him.

Very Strong
Jhin is very strong champion to have him. He has great pokes, traps and can land a root if you land your CC on enemies. On top of that, he can snipe enemies with his ultimate if you catch enemies.

Strong
Strong champion that can fire bullets or rockets. Scales well in late game and can dominate lane early if you both play smart.

Good
Good ADC with good damage, mobility and scaling. However, she lacks of CC adn can be really weak if you fall behind.

Strong
Kalista is really strong with Galio due to her ultimate since she will use her spear on you and teleport you to a location to knock enemies. In lane, she is very strong and mobile and can dodge many skillshots.

Good
Strong and safe waveclear but can be somewhat easily punished early. Since you both deal magic damage, enemies will build Magic Resist Items to counter you and you won't be able to do much damage and land your CC.

Bad
Quite bad champion since he is weak and immobile champion and has no escapes. Enemies will bully him hard early and you won't be able to do much if they play smart.

Strong
Lucian is a very powerful early game champion that can snowball hard. If you land your CC on enemies, he can deal tons of damage and kill them if he is fast.

Strong
Strong champion with annoying pokes and insane damage once she has few Items. With your CC, she can dish out tons of damage with her ultimate.

Strong
Short range champion than any other ADC champions but she is very strong, mobile and can outplay a lot. If you land your CC on enemies, she will manage to hit enemies with her ultimate and kill them.

Strong
You land your CC on enemies, she will use her ultimate and the enemies won't be able to escape. Great combo. Just don't fall behind, play smart and you will win.

Bad
If she plays as ADC, then she won't get stacks if she last minions which is bad. She won't scale much like Support and she is also very squishy and easy to kill her.

Good
Strong pokes, CC, buffs and scaling. The downsides is that the enemies will buy defensive Items to counter her.

Good
Strong waveclear, can block enemy spells with her spellshield and scales well. She has no CC overall and has pretty much a lot of counters.

Strong
You both work really well together since you both has nice CC. If you manage to land your CC on enemies properly, enemies won't be able to escape from Swain's ultimate.

Strong
Strong champion who can engage well and snowball hard. However, one any mistake from her or from you, you might lose your lane.

Good
Weak early and immobile champion but he scales like a monster in late game if he doesn't fall behind. Just make sure to play really smart in your lane and don't die a lot.

Strong
You both have nice CC abilities and Varus can land his ultimate easily if you manage to taunt your enemies.

Good
Weak early but scales insanely and can any champion in 1 vs 1. Always keep her safe and don't make her behind.

Good
Needs to farm for scaling. He has nice CC from his cage overall and he can land his skillshots if you CC on enemies. However, enemies will build tenacity and it will be very hard for him to land abilities.

Good
Has a good poke from her feathers and can avoid many abilities with her ultimate. However, she has no CC and can be useless if she is behind.

Strong
Yasuo works really well with Galio since you have knock up and he can activate his ultimate freely to gain Armor Penetration and kill enemies. He can be easily punished in lane since he is melee so play carefully both of you.

Good
Good pokes, good mobility and good scaling. She doesn't have any CC to stop enemies overall and can be useless if she falls behind.

Strong
He has long ranged pokes that can fire from distance and can push really hard. If you land your CC on enemies, he can land his ultimate easily and probably kill them. He can also destroy enemy tower below 25% with his satchel bomb. Really strong champion that also scales well in late game.
What to ban?

There are many OP or should I say: Broken champions that many players found them frustrating to beat them or they don't wanna face them in general. I am going to show you what recommended champions you should ban if you are playing going to play Galio in mid lane:

Akshan
This champion is too strong for Galio to face him. He has incredibely strong early/mid game, great roaming potential and can revive his teammates if he manages to kill a champion who is marked as a scoundrel. A good Akshan will completely destroy Galio since Galio is bad against AD champions. Even after a couple of his nerfs, he is still strong champion. This is my recommended ban if you don't wanna face this heroic dude.

Irelia
She is still broken champion and a lot of people are crying and want her to get nerfed. She is almost impossible to counter her if she plays very correctly and Galio can't do much against her. And even much worse once she has Blade of the Ruined King, it will be impossible to beat her 1 vs 1. Consider banning her if you don't want to face this cancer.

Veigar
Now look, I know this champion free stack against Galio since this is basicly almost free lane if you don't do anything to him but as a Galio player if you can get jungler to camp him and stop him from preventing stacking and if you can finish the game before 30 minutes, you will eventually have a good time. But honestly, you can ban him since he is now very popular due to his buffs.

Viktor
He is very strong champion and a lot of people underestimate his damage in every stage of the game. It's very hard to play against a good Viktor and he is a late game monster and very deadly in teamfights thanks to his AoE abilities. If you get caught on his Gravity Field, you are pretty much dead. This guy is also good to ban.

Yone
Very unbalanced and very broken champion once he gets few items as he can almost any champions 1 vs 1 or even 1 vs 3. He is manaless and his abilities and basic attacks deals pshyical, magical and true damage which is ridicilous. He also got some buffs in some patches ago. Another good ban if you do not wanna face this champion.

Zed
One of the most banned champion in the game. He can counter almost any champions in mid lane if he plays correctly and has very good roams. Despite being nerfed in many patches, the players are still banning him. Even if you buy Zhonya's Hourglass, he will focus on easy target who doesn't have any defensive items. This is my personal ban (my other personal bans are Akshan and Irelia) so ban this evil ninja if you don't wanna face him.
Conclusion

And that's it. That's the end of the my guide. I hope this guide will help you a lot and make your game much better with Galio. If you got any questions, feel free to ask me anything. Once again, thank you and hey, check this my other guides if you want to play with them as well! :D
